Peru Presidential Runoff Election
Lima, Peru | June 6, 2021

Peru will hold a presidential runoff election on June 6th, in a vote being closely watched around Latin America.

Defying the polls, Pedro Castillo, an elementary school teacher, came first in the April 11th voting, albeit with less than 20% of the overall vote.

The stunning result gave Castillo a place in the presidential runoff against Keiko Fujimori, one of Peru’s most established political figures and the daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori. It is her third attempt to become president.

The presidential contest came months after the country’s political chaos reached a new level in November. Three men were president in a single week after one was impeached by Congress over corruption allegations, and protests forced his successor to resign in favor of the third.
