The protesters used slogans from the American protest movement to call for justice for Adama Traore, whose death four years ago has been a rallying cause against police brutality in France.

The protest started in the late afternoon outside the court in northern Paris, before projectiles were thrown and the police used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

FRANCE PROTEST TURNS VIOLENT
PARIS, FRANCE | 02 JUNE 2020

Protests turned violent in Paris on Tuesday night as French riot police fired tear gas to scatter demonstrators rallying to express outrage over the death of George Floyd in the United States.

As frustrations escalated worldwide, protesters in the French capital pelted police officers with debris and set fires during an unauthorised demonstration against racial injustice and heavy-handed police tactics.

Several thousand people had previously rallied peacefully for two hours at the main Paris courthouse, in spite of a police ban on the gathering because of coronavirus restrictions.
