IRELAND ELECTION

Voters in the Republic of Ireland cast ballots on Saturday 8 February in a general election.

Prime Minister Leo Varadkar is struggling to keep his job, as his ruling Fine Gael party battles both the main opposition Fianna Fail and Irish nationalist party Sinn Fein, whose popularity is surging.

In calling the poll, Varadkar sought to portray himself as best-placed to represent Irish interests in the next phase of Brexit negotiations between the European Union and the United Kingdom. However, housing and health care issues have dominated the campaign.
