VATICAN CONSISTORY TO CREATE 14 NEW CARDINALS
ROME, ITALY
28 JUNE, 2018

Pope Francis will create 14 new cardinals from numerous nations around the world including Iraq, Pakistan, Portugal, and Peru in a ceremony at the Vatican on June 28, 2018.

Eleven of the new cardinals are under the age of 80, which means they are eligible to participate in conclaves called to elect new Popes. Other cardinals-to-be also hail from nations including Madagascar, Italy, Poland, Mexico, and Japan.
Amongst those to be made cardinals are Patriarch Louis Raphaël I Sako of Iraqi, and Archbishop Konrad Krajewski of Poland. In addition, Bishop António Augusto dos Santos Marto of Portugal and Archbishop Désiré Tsarahazana of Madagascar are also to be inducted, as is Archbishop Thomas Aquino Manyo Maeda of Japan.

The June 28 ceremony will bring the total number of cardinals to 227, of whom 125 will be under 80, so able to vote for a new pope. The consistory is Francis’s fifth after previous events in 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017.
