GERMAN COALITION CRISIS: CSU VERDICT ON MERKEL’S EU DEAL
BERLIN, GERMANY
1 JULY 2018
German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Bavarian allies, the CSU, will assess at a meeting on Sunday, 1 July, whether a deal reached by Merkel in Brussels is acceptable.
If a “satisfactory” deal is not achieved, German Interior Minister and CSU chief Horst Seehofer has threatened to defy Merkel and turn away people at the German border who have applied for asylum in other EU member states. National border controls would undermine the EU’s system of free travel and could lead to a German government crisis.
