GERMAN SOCIAL-DEMOCRAT PARTY (SPD) BOARD MEETING
BERLIN, GERMANY
4 MARCH 2018

The German Social Democrat party (SPD) board will hold a meeting on Sunday 4 March in Berlin. This is when the results of a binding postal vote by Members on forming a coalition government with the centre-right Christian Democrats will be announced.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has agreed a coalition deal between her conservative bloc (CDU), and the centre-left party (SPD). The CDU approved the deal on Monday. The SPD’s leaders want the coalition to go ahead, but there is also strong opposition within the party grassroots. The SPD vote will determine if Angela Merkel is confirmed for a fourth term which would put an end to a five-month political deadlock in Germany. If SPD members vote “NO” to the coalition, the most likely outcome is a new election or possibly a minority government in Europe’s biggest economy.
