Cyril Ramaphosa became South Africa's president with a message of clean government and inclusiveness on Thursday, stirring the hopes of many South Africans that he can reverse a corrosive period of decline and division under his predecessor, Jacob Zuma.

He will return to parliament Friday evening to deliver a state of the nation address that had been postponed during the ruling party's deliberations with Zuma over his resignation. The occasion will feature both policy and pomp, including a military parade, a flyover by air force planes, a 21-gun salute and more than 1,100 guests.

SOUTH AFRICA: NEW PRESIDENT RAMAPHOSA STATE OF THE NATION ADDRESS
CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA
16 FEBRUARY 2018

Newly elected South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, will give the previously postponed State of the Union Address this Friday evening. His predecessor, Jacob Zuma, resigned as the country's President on Wednesday night, after days of defying orders from the country's ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), to leave office and on the eve of a no-confidence vote in parliament.

Jacob Zuma, who led the ANC since 2007 and been South Africa's president since 2009, was due to leave power next year. Corruption allegations and mismanagement have characterised his nine years in power.
