An important historical change is upcoming in Cuba. After almost 60 years with a man named Castro in power, Cuba will now elect a new president on April 19th, 2018.
Since 1959 and for almost half a century, Fidel Castro ruled the island nation; for the past decade, it has been his brother Raul Castro. Together, their mandate defined modern Cuba and shaped Latin America through the Cold War and beyond.
For this monumental moment in the history of Cuba and the region, The Associated Press will provide broadcast facilities in Havana:

CUBAN ELECTIONS

APRIL 18TH - 20TH, 2018
The era of the Castro family will come to an end in Cuba on April 19th, when the National Assembly selects a new President. It will be the first time since the country’s 1959 revolution that someone outside the powerful family of Fidel and Raúl Castro will hold the office. 86-year-old Raúl plans to retire but will still lead the Communist Party. Vice-President Miguel Díaz-Canel is seen as the likely successor to the Presidency.
