Bonn, Germany 21 January 2018 Senior Social Democrats have voiced criticism against a German coalition deal struck with Angela Merkel’s conservatives, increasing the odds that the agreement may fail and plunge Europe’s largest economy into further months of political limbo. Angela Merkel and SPD leader Martin Schulz last week agreed the outline of a new coalition deal. The SPD’s entry into further, more detailed talks about a new government is contingent on support from a party convention on January 21. Rejection would likely force Germany into fresh elections, because no other combination of parties seems able to form a government after the results of the September 24 election. After winning just 20.5 per cent of the votes in September’s poll and suffering the worst electoral result in postwar elections, the SPD has become largely reluctant to form a new government with Merkel.
