CATALAN PARLIAMENT TO ELECT NEW PRESIDENT

BARCELONA, SPAIN

30-31 JANUARY 2018

Spanish Constitutional Court has decided on Saturday afternoon that the former president of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, could only be elected president of Catalonia if he was physically present in the parliament .The Constitutional court will not recognize Puigdemont investiture done remotely via video conference from Brussels .

The speaker of the Catalan parliament,Roger Torrent has nominated Carles Puigdemont to become the sole candidate after the separatists partys won again the majority following last december anticipated elections.

Puigdemont fled to Brussels after declaring Catalonia unilateral independence from Spain last October.

He faces charges for rebellion and sedition and he is likely to be arrested if he returns to Spain. Carles Puigdemont has not ruled out travelling to Barcelona to be present for the session of Catalonia’s parliament scheduled for Tuesday 30 January.

CATALAN GOVERNMENT TO FORM NEW REGIONAL GOVERNMENT

Catalonia's fugitive ex-president Carles Puigdemont will soon request permission from a Spanish judge to attend a parliamentary session to form a new regional government, a separatist lawmaker says.

Spain's Constitutional Court ruled Saturday that Puigdemont must be present at parliament to be chosen as the region's chief. It also said he must ask for a judge's permission to do so.
