The U.N. Security Council is planning an emergency meeting about Iran on Friday (1500ET/2000GMT), after the U.S. asked the world body to show support for Iran's anti-government protesters.

"This is a matter of fundamental human rights for the Iranian people, but it is also a matter of international peace and security," the U.S. envoy, Nikki Haley, said in a statement Thursday night."

Iran's interior minister said up to 42,000 people took part in the week of protests and unrest sparked by economic woes. At least 21 people have been killed and hundreds arrested.
