President Donald Trump will recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital on Wednesday, a move that could have deep repercussions across the region.
Any recognition of Israel's control over the city will be welcomed by Israel and pro-Israel evangelical Christian voters, a key part of Trump's base. But it could also trigger violence in the region, derail a developing U.S. Mideast peace plan and infuriate key allies in the Arab world and the West.

President Trump will deliver a major statement on Jerusalem today, in which he is expected to recognize the disputed city as the capital of Israel. The controversial move, which will deliver on a Trump campaign promise, is expected to cause wide-ranging effects around the world. Jerusalem has long been at the center of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with Palestinians claiming East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state. President Trump is also expected to announce a relocation of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem although the move will not be immediate.
