A gunman dressed in black tactical-style gear and armed with an assault rifle opened fire inside a small South Texas church, killing 26 people in an attack that claimed tight-knit neighbors and multiple family members ranging in age from 5 to 72 years old.

Authorities say a man walked into the First Baptist church of Sutherland Springs, Texas and opened fire on the churchgoers. Twenty-seven people were killed and 30 others injured in the deadliest mass shooting in modern Texas history. The unidentified gunman was dressed in tactical gear and led police in a car chase before he died. It is unclear if he took his own life or was killed in a confrontation with the authorities.
