JAPANESE GENERAL ELECTIONS
TOKYO, JAPAN
22 OCTOBER, 2017

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s party looks set to win in parliamentary elections on Sunday, 22 October.

The 63-year-old is on course to keep his job through 2020 and become the longest-serving leader in the country’s history. Abe announced a snap election last month. An election wasn’t expected to take place until 2018. He has justified the election as a way to confirm his mandate at a time when the country is facing a “national crisis,” chiefly because of the threat from North Korea.
