A Socialist opposition politician says that her party has reached agreement with the Spanish government to hold regional elections in Catalonia in January as a way to resolve one of the country's deepest political crises in decades.
The elections are among a range of measures being put in place to take control of some of Catalonia's powers and thwart an independence bid by regional leaders.
A special Cabinet meeting to be held on Saturday in Madrid is expected to trigger Article 155 of the Constitution, paving the way for the central government to impose direct rule in Catalonia.
