ICAN NOBEL PEACE PRIZE
GENEVA, SWITZERLAND
6 OCTOBER 2017

The 2017 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the Geneva-based International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). ICAN was selected from amongst 215 individuals and 103 organisations being considered for the prestigious international award. ICAN released a statement on social media stating that "It is a great honour to have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2017 in recognition of our role in achieving the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons." The agreement was the first legally binding international agreement to comprehensively prohibit nuclear weapons. It was adopted on 7 July this year and was backed by 122 nations.
