ISCHIA EARTHQUAKE
ISCHIA, ITALY

An earthquake rocked the Italian resort island of Ischia at the peak of tourist season Monday night, killing at least one person and trapping a half dozen others, including children, under collapsed homes, rescuers reported.

Police said all but one of the people known to be trapped were responding to rescuers and were expected to be extracted alive.

Italy’s national volcanology institute revised the magnitude to 4.0 from an initial estimate of 3.6.

The temblor struck just as many people were having dinner.
Serveral buildings collapsed in Casamicciola, the hardest-hit area of the island. Holidaymakers gathered outside hotels as at least one hotel and parts of Rizzoli hospital were evacuated.

Rescuers confirmed one person was killed by falling masonry and three children and a couple were extracted from under the rubble so far.
Together with the nearby island of Capri, Ischia is a favorite tourist spot, renowned for its thermal waters.
