Wildfires raging northeast of Athens for a fourth day as Greece asked for help from its European partners to prevent them from spreading. Fire Service officials said planes and helicopters are fighting the blaze at Varnava near Kapandriti, 40 km north of the Greek capital, while a main road in the area is closed to traffic to give fire trucks better access. Arson-related fires near populated areas in Greece are often associated with illegal development, especially near Athens and around holiday resorts.
