The annual Augsburg Peace Festival has been marked annually since 1650. It was originally celebrated by the Protestants of Augsburg, marking the 1648 'Peace of Westphalia' which initiated the end of anti-Protestant oppression during the Thirty Years' War. Today, Augsburg marks the occasion as a public holiday. There is a special church service for members of all Christian faiths in Augsburg. There is also a festive market in the city and a competition for school children to create art representing "peace". Once every three years, Augsburg’s mayor announces the Augsburg Peace Prize winner.
