A US Congressman was among several people shot when an attacker opened fire on a baseball practice session in Alexandria, Virginia.

Witnesses said between 50 and 100 rounds of ammunition were fired and two Capitol police officers were among the others injured.

Steve Scalise, from Louisiana, is the third-ranking Republican in the House of Representatives. He was injured in the hip and was said to be in stable condition. He and several other Congressmen were practising for an annual charity baseball game.

A top US House Republican, Steve Scalise of Louisiana, was shot by a rifle-wielding gunman Wednesday at a congressional baseball practice just outside of Washington. Several other people were also believed to have been hit, according to a lawmaker who witnessed the shooting.
