VIENNA, AUSTRIA
11-12 MAY 2017

Sustainable energy for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement will be the theme of this year’s Vienna Energy Forum taking place in the capital of Austria from 9 to 12 May.

The 5th Vienna Energy Forum will serve as a platform for discussing and highlighting the importance of the linkages between climate and development as well as the synergies among the SDGs, and the importance of joint and integrated approaches for successful implementation. The Forum will explore the role of innovation in opening up new avenues for achieving SDG 7 “Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all”, and related SDGs.

The implementation of these goals and of the Paris Climate Agreement calls for an unprecedented global transformation process that extends far beyond the energy sector. Innovation is urgently needed to drive this transformative agenda.

High-level sessions will take place at the Hofburg Palace on 11 and 12 May, and will be preceded by side events at the Vienna International Centre.

Key speakers will include Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations; Piyush Goyal, Minister of State for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy and Mines, India; Pavel Kabat, Director General and CEO of International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA); Rachel Kyte, Chief Executive Officer of Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All; LI Yong, Director General, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO); Michael Linhart, Secretary General at the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, Austria; Andrä Rupprechter, Minister for Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management, Austria; and Maria Vassilakou, Deputy Mayor and Executive City Councillor, City of Vienna.
