ALGERIAN LEGISLATIVE ELECTIONS
ALGIERS, ALGERIA

On May 4, Algeria will hold legislative elections for the People’s National Assembly where voters will elect 462 members of the lower house of the bicameral Parliament.
The elections will be the first since the Parliament adopted constitutional reforms last year.

As part of these amendments, an independent electoral commission has been created and will play an advisory role in future elections.

Over 40 parties and 1,000 candidates will compete in the parliamentary poll and in the run up to the election the national election body has ordered all political parties to display pictures of female candidates on their posters instead of a blank image.

The High Authority for Election Monitoring (HIISE) in the province took the decision after a lengthy social media campaign against the practice.
