INFORMAL MEETING OF DEFENCE MINISTERS (FAC DEFENCE) - MHAS
VALLETTA, MALTA
26-27 APRIL, 2017

An Informal meeting of EU Defence Ministers will take place in Valletta on 26 and 27 April 2017, chaired by the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy.

The NATO Secretary General, Mr. Jens Stoltenberg and a senior UN peacekeeping official, normally the Under Secretary General of the Department of Peacekeeping at the United Nations, will also attend. During his visit, the Secretary General will meet with the Prime Minister, Dr. Joseph Muscat, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. George Vella and the Minister of National Security, Mr. Carmelo Abela.

Participants will also include representatives from a number of European Union Agencies and Organisations. The Council currently meets once informally (in the Presidency country) and once formally (in Brussels) during each Presidency. Member States are represented by their Ministers for Defence.

The background to the meeting in Valletta will be decisions adopted at the December 2016 European Council in particular on strengthening defence capabilities as well as how the EU Member States and the Union as a whole can contribute to the enhancement of the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), a critical component of the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP).
