PRESIDENT TRUMP TO ANNOUNCE SUPREME COURT PICK
WASHINGTON DC, USA | 31 JANUARY - 01 FEBRUARY 2017
US SUPREME COURT ►
WHITE HOUSE ►
AP BUREAU ►
President Trump will announce his choice for the Supreme Court at the White House on Tuesday night at 2000ET/0100GMT.
The high court has had just eight justices since Antonin Scalia’s death last year, after Senate Republicans refused to act on President Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland – and Senate Democrats say they will oppose any pick outside the mainstream. A person familiar with the discussion says federal appeals court judges William Pryor, Neil Gorsuch and Thomas Hardiman are Trump’s front-runners.
While this pick would return the court to a conservative majority, it could also signal the beginning of a push to reframe healthcare law, LGBT rights and other hot-button topics.
