A giant arch will cover the shelter housing damaged reactor 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant on November 29, 2016.

The New Safe Confinement (NSC) is designed to make the old Chernobyl shelter and remnants of the damaged reactor safe and environmentally secure. This arch-shaped construction is 110 meters high, 165 meters long and 260 meters wide and is to be pulled over the former Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant to contain radiation from the damaged reactor for the next 100 years.

The arch will provide a safe working environment equipped with heavy duty cranes for the future dismantling of the shelter and waste management after the completion of the NSC.Construction of the New Safe Confinement is financed through the Chernobyl Shelter Fund which is operated and supported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development

The CSF is funded by 27 contributors, including the European Union, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Italy, France and Ukraine. The EBRD is also a donor to the project.
