Jacques Chirac, one of the most powerful presidents in recent French history, is ill in hospital. He was admitted to La Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris on Sunday 18th September suffering a lung infection.

Since leaving the Elysee Palace in May 2007, the former president, 83, who suffered a stroke in 2005, has been hospitalized several times , including for a fortnight in December 2015 (at the same hospital).
