REFUGEE SUMMIT
VIENNA, AUSTRIA
24 SEPTEMBER 2016

Austria will hold a refugee summit in Vienna on September 24. Heads of state or governments from 10 other countries including Germany, the countries of the Balkans, Serbia, Greece, Hungary and Croatia amongst others.

Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern has said Europe needs a new policy for how its borders are policed and has called for greater cooperation from the EU to safeguard its external borders.

Before the Balkan route was closed in March, almost 500,000 migrants came over Slovenia to Austria and further to other European states.

Austria wants to limit the number of asylum applications in the current year to under forty thousand.
