The critical meeting in St Petersburg between Turkish President Reccep Tayyip Erdoğan and his counterpart Vladimir Putin set off a new beginning in restoring relations between the two countries. Putin and Erdoğan have decided the re-establishment of economic ties, such as trade, tourism and energy, as well as increasing cooperation in defense. Putin showed his support to Turkey during the failed-coup's aftermath, whilst Erdoğan called Putin his "friend" for this support, adding that their relationship is stronger than it used to be.

This visit has been an important step for reconciliation and comes at a time when Turkey's ties with the West have cooled over Erdoğan's purge of coup-plotters.
