A Greek court in Athens is considering the request for asylum for the eight Turkish army officers who fled to Greece following the 15 July coup attempt in Turkey. They had fled to to Alexandroupolis by military helicopter, and were then sentenced to two months in prison for illegally entering the country. Turkey had demanded their return in order to stand trial for taking part in the coup attempt, however the eight officers have denied any involvement and said that they fear for their safety.
