German Chancellor Angela Merkel has backed Prime Minister Theresa May’s decision to wait until 2017 before starting the formal process of leaving the European Union. However, while Merkel stated that the UK needed time to put together a negotiating stance before triggering a formal divorce from the bloc, she made it clear that no one wants “a long period of limbo”.
Therese May has asked for time to work out how best to attack the complex and unprecedented negotiation for Brexit. Other leaders in the bloc are showing little sign they will make things easy for the UK.
