20.07.2016France: France votes to extend state of emergency in wake of Nice attack *** ARCHIVE

IHA News Agency

French President François Hollande and his government have come under fierce criticism over last week’s horrific truck attack in Nice, accusing them of failing to do enough to combat terrorism. It was on the same day that Hollande had announced that the state of emergency would not be extended beyond 26 July.

Following the massacre in Nice, France's National Assembly voted in the early hours of Wednesday 20 July to extend the country's state of emergency for six months, until January 2017. The state of emergency, that has been in place since last November, gives the police extra powers to carry out searches and place people under house arrest.
