TURKEY - ATTEMPTED COUP D'ETAT
ISTANBUL, TURKEY
21 JULY 2016
After the failed army coup on Friday night Turkey's president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has declared a state of emergency for 3 months.
Mr Erdogan announced the declaration at the presidential palace in Ankara after holding meetings of Turkey's national Security Council and the cabinet in the capital. During his speech he reinsured that "all the viruses within the armed forces will be cleaned".
The declaration might be used to extend the detention of the targeted groups since the failed coup. By now hundreds of schools have been closed and thousands of state workers sacked in a crackdown by the president.
