The first-ever World Humanitarian Summit is to take place in Istanbul. It is described as a 'call to action' by UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon to reduce human loss and suffering from crises. The summit will set an agenda for change to make humanitarian action fit for the challenges of the future.

The first-ever World Humanitarian Summit is taking place in Istanbul on 23-24 May with at least 50 leaders attending, whilst 110 countries send a delegation. The summit will be held under the chairmanship of U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Among the attendants, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte , whose country holds the six-month presidency of the European Union, Kuwait’s emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, Niger’s President Mahamadou Issoufou and Lebanon’s Prime Minister Tammam Salam whose country is hosting more than one million Syrian refugees.
The United States is expected to send the head of the US Agency for International Development, whilst a question mark remains over the representation from France and Britain.

WORLD HUMANITARIAN SUMMIT
ISTANBUL, TURKEY
23- 24 MAY 2016
As an initiative of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon to foster new ways of providing support to people suffering from natural disasters or conflicts, the first-ever World Humanitarian Summit will take place on 23-24 May 2016 in Istanbul.
Following two years of intensive global consultations, this summit will bring together all key international humanitarian stakeholders, including governments and regional organizations, humanitarian organizations, partners from civil society, the private sector, academia, the military, community first-responders and affected populations, to propose solutions to the most pressing humanitarian challenges and to set an agenda to increase the efficiency and reach of humanitarian action.
