Leicester City Football Club has become the most improbable champion in English soccer history after being written off as relegation candidates at the start of the season, when bookmakers made them 5,000-to-1 outsiders.

Leicester had never won the championship in their 132 years of existence, completed the biggest upset in sports this year with a roster full of journeymen and castoffs, a payroll a fraction the size of its richer rivals, and a manager hired only last summer. While everyone outside Leicester waited for them to fade, they outlasted and finished above the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Arsenal. English football has been dominated by the same half-dozen clubs for decades that the idea of a brand new champion in today’s day and age seemed unlikely.

Only four different teams have won the title in the past two decades — Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal. The last time England crowned a first-time champion was 1978. The closest Leicester had come before this season was finishing as runner-up in 1928-29.
