SPANISH GENERAL ELECTIONS
MADRID, SPAIN
26-27 JUNE 2016

As no political party had enough support to form a government after last December's elections, the parliament was dissolved and new Spanish general elections are to be held on 26 June.

Spain has been without a government since the last Spanish general elections held on 20 December. After four months, none of the political parties succeeded in obtaining a majority. The Popular Party (PP), the Socialist Party (PSOE) and the 2 new parties Ciudadanos (C's) and Podemos could not reach the number of 176 seats to elect a new prime minister with a sustained coalition.

It is unclear whether the new election will produce a different outcome. According to polls, PP will still come first but will again probably have trouble in finding support from any other parties. PSOE came second in December's election and reached an agreement with C's to form a government but did not get support from Podemos. Now, Podemos is going to the elections in coalition with the small left party Izquierda Unida (IU) which could put them in second position before PSOE and thus giving them the initiative to present a candidate for government.

Since democracy was reinstated in1978, Spanish political life has always been dominated by two main parties, but since the 2008 crisis and major corruption scandals two new major political parties, Podemos (left) and Ciudadanos (center), have emerged on the Spanish political scene.

New Feed Points for 26 June from 1500 till 1900 GMT at Teatro Goya - Podemos HQ and from 2000 GMT at Parque de La Reina Sofia.

The 2016 Spanish general election will be held on Sunday, 26 June, to elect the 12th Cortes Generales of Spain.

No party secured a majority in the 2015 election which had resulted the most fragmented parliament since 1977. Ensuing negotiations led to a political deadlock, with failure in coalition talks paving the way to a fresh election for 26 June.
