26th June, 2016 – Panama:
The Panama Canal expansion inauguration

The inauguration of the Panama Canal Expansion has been scheduled for Sunday 26 June 2016. The Panama Canal Expansion Project, also known as the Third Set of Locks Project, began in September 2007. Completion was planned for 2014 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal. However, the opening was delayed for various reasons including strikes and disputes between the administrator of the Panama Canal and the building consortium over costs. In addition, last August a crack was discovered in the concrete sill no. 3 of the new Cocolí locks, on the Pacific side. This has been repaired as confirmed by the Panama Canal Authority in February. Completion levels are currently at 97%.

Overon is offering the following facilities from Panama:

Panama has set a June 26 date to inaugurate an expanded canal linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans following a multibillion-dollar expansion.

The $5.2 billion expansion was initially slated to be concluded in October 2014. But a string of work stoppages and disputes with the Italian conglomerate behind the expansion over cost overruns has led to repeated delays.

As part of the expansion project, wider locks will reduce congestion and be able to accommodate post-Panamex vessels, which have the capacity to carry 2.5 times the number of containers than held by ships currently using the canal.

The Associated Press will provide standup positions overlooking the Panama Canal.
