VIENNA, AUSTRIA

The run-off of the Austrian presidential election will be held on 22 May. No candidate has secured a majority of the vote after the first ballot.

Norbert Hofer of the anti immigration far-right Freedom Party, the FPOe, won the first round of the Austrian election with 35% of the vote. His opponent, the independent candidate Alexander Van der Bellen, who is backed by the Green Party, obtained 21%. For the first time since 1945, the candidates from the two major Austrian parties, SPOe and OeVP, did not make it to the final run-off.

All parties' campaigns focus greatly on migration issues and the slowing down of the economy. Austria’s government which at present is a coalition of the SPOe and the OeVP, is seen by voters as out of touch and ineffective. The result of the first round is considered a "historical" change in the political landscape.
