Referendum over Italy's energy policy becomes a political challenge
April 17, 2016
A referendum to shape Italy’s energy policy for the next decades will take place on Sunday April 17th.
The vote will decide whether oil companies can continue to exploit gas and oil drills within 12 miles of Italy's coastline.
The ballot was requested by regional councils concerned over the seismic stability and the delicate Italian cost environment, claiming the country is not investing enough in green energy and asking for a political change in setting the energy policy of the future.
The vote has raised a strong political polemic with Prime Minister Matteo Renzi who openly declared he will not vote and asked Italians to abstain. Others, including people inside his party and Italy's constitutional court, believe it is vital to take part as all the citizens have a duty to cast a ballot.
As a consequence this referendum on the future country's energy policy has become a symbolic challenge for Renzi's leadership in Italy.
