Eurovision News Events

FLORENCE, ITALY 28 APRIL 2016 The appeals trial against the former captain of the Costa Concordia cruise liner is scheduled to start in Florence on April 28. The luxury liner crashed on the rocky shore of the island of Giglio off the Tuscan coast four years ago, killing 32 people. In February 2015 the Court of Grosseto sentenced Captain Francesco Schettino to 16 years and one month in jail for manslaughter, causing multiple injuries and abandoning ship. The 55-year-old is appealing the sentence, while the prosecution filed a counter-appeal in a bid to increase the prison term. The prosecution had asked for a 26-year imprisonment in the first trial. A group of families representing the victims of the Costa Concordia disaster have also challenged last year’s ruling, asking for higher compensation.
