The Venice Commission adopted a report opinion on the state of law in Poland. Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Konrad Szymański described it as “controversial”.
The Venice Commission, an advisory group to human rights body the Council of Europe, was asked for the opinion by Poland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Witold Waszczykowski due to an ongoing constitutional crisis in Poland. A crisis erupted following reforms of the country’s Constitutional Tribunal pushed through in December. The crisis deepened this week when the Constitutional Tribunal on Wednesday ruled that the changes were unconstitutional.
