21.03.2016Russia: Verdict delivered in trial of Ukrainian pilot Nadia Savchenko *** ARCHIVE

IHA News Agency

The verdict in the trial of Ukrainian military pilot Nadezhda Savchenko is expected to be announced on 21 March. Savchenko, captured by Kremlin-backed rebels in eastern Ukraine and handed over to Moscow in 2014, faces 25 years in jail if found guilty of complicity in the killing of two Russian journalists in east Ukraine and of crossing into Russia illegally. She denies any wrongdoing, saying she was spirited into Russia by the rebels after being captured in a day-long battle in June, 2014. The trial was being held in the small southern Russian town of Donetsk, which has the same name as the Ukrainian city that is the main rebel stronghold.
