PARIS, FRANCE
13 MARCH 2016
US Secretary of State John Kerry and his French, German, British and Italian colleagues, as well as the European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, are going to meet in Paris on March 13 to discuss the Syrian crisis ahead of the peace talks to take place the next week in Geneva.
French Foreign minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said they will examine the ceasefire in effect since February 27 and ask the United States "to be closely involved in monitoring the effectiveness of the Syrian ceasefire" which was brokered between the US and Russia. They also intend to ensure that the Russian air strikes are aimed only at jihadist organisations, and not against the more moderate opposition.
The truce between President Bashar al-Assad's regime and non-jihadist rebels is part of the biggest diplomatic effort so far to end the conflict, which has killed more than 250,000 people and displaced millions.
