Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that most of the Russian armed forces in Syria would start to withdraw from the country, while talks have started in Geneva in order to find a political solution to Syria's conflict.
This has been interpreted as a way of pressing Bashar Al Assad into accepting an agreement, especially since Syria’s main opposition delegation agreed to attend the United Nations-brokered peace talks with the government.
UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura stated that "The announcement by President Putin on the very day of the beginning of this round of Intra-Syrian Talks in Geneva is a significant development, which we hope will have a positive impact on the progress of the negotiations in Geneva aimed at achieving a political solution of the Syrian conflict and a peaceful political transition in the country."
A cease fire brokered by Russia and US backed up by a UN resolution has been implemented aiming at ending fighting and delivering humanitarian aid. In early February previous talks had collapsed after making no progress at all.
