UK EU REFERENDUM

British voters will decide in a referendum on June 23 whether the country should remain a member of the European Union.

Britain joined the European Community – as it was then called – in 1973. Voters confirmed this decision two years later in a referendum with 66 per cent in favour.

But in 2013, after decades of political controversy in the UK about the issue of “Europe”, Prime Minister David Cameron promised the country a vote on a British exit from the EU – the so-called “Brexit”.

In the final weeks of the referendum campaign, the debate is defined by warnings about the possible serious economic, security and political consequences both of leaving and staying.

The governing Conservatives and the Labour opposition support continuing membership, but both parties have leading members campaigning for the UK to end its political and economic ties with the rest of Europe via the European Union.

Voting will take place between 0700-2200BST (0600-2100GMT). The result is expected early the following day, June 24.
