The European Commission is to launch disciplinary proceedings against seven Spanish football clubs, including Barcelona and Real Madrid, over allegations of benefiting from favourable financial treatment from the state.

Proceedings would be announced in Brussels on Wednesday 18th December.

Barcelona, Real and top-tier Liga rivals Athletic Bilbao and Osasuna are suspected of benefiting from favourable tax arrangements while the financial support – in the form of loans and bank guarantees – provided by regional governments to Valencia, Elche and second-tier Hercules is also being probed. The commission is also investigating Real over the development of its training centre and Bilbao over the construction of its new stadium.
