Location:

Job Description

We are looking for a Senior Social Newsgathering Reporter to help lead verification and reporting on visual content and eyewitness accounts that emerge online, to support storytelling across all NBC News broadcast, digital and streaming platforms. This role will require both digital newsgathering and traditional reporting experience, as well as a demonstrated ability to see the big picture around news coverage and to assign, guide and review the work of more junior team members.

The ideal candidate will have a firm grasp of daily news stories and a deep knowledge of domestic and foreign news topics and trends. They should demonstrate advanced knowledge of how content and information circulate online, as well as extensive experience using open-source, visual forensic techniques for reporting purposes. This candidate should be able to work under deadline pressure, take and give direction well, and excel at discovering, verifying and contextualizing newsworthy material. This senior reporter will provide critical support to the Director of Social Newsgathering by helping oversee a team that pursues innovative approaches to reporting, verification and storytelling, and by ensuring that the team’s work is held to the highest standards.

Candidates should have considerable experience working in a news operation and show they can drive coverage forward and generate unique coverage ideas. They should be comfortable reporting on stories across a variety of news topics, with particular expertise around U.S. and international breaking news. They must be team players with a demonstrated ability to collaborate across platforms and to exert a positive influence on their colleagues’ work.

Applicants should understand that this role includes exposure to graphic and otherwise unsettling visuals, and interaction with members of the public who have experienced trauma. The ideal candidate will be open to employing and sharing coping techniques that mitigate the impact of this exposure, and to promoting a supportive and collaborative team culture.

The role, based in New York, is focused on overseeing social newsgathering work on the weekend, and successful candidate should expect to work both weekend days as part of their regular schedule. The person in this role might sometimes have to work other hours, including afternoon and evening shifts.
