After 117-plane deal, Airbus courts Turkish Airlines for new orders

Expressing the opinion that Turkish Airlines' growth is enviable, the CEO said: “Ten years ago, THY had 65 planes, right now 250 and the target is to reach to 375 by 2020. We are not only signing a deal here but also being part of the ambitious company vision. The carrier already ranks top with its quality of services, efficiency and safety.”
THY CEO Hamdi Topçu stated that with the purchase, the age of the fleet has declined from 6.6 to 5, saying that THY has taken a major step toward its targets for the future. “We have increased the number of passengers and revenue fivefold since 2003. The stability of growth figures is not a coincidence but a result of implemented growth strategies.”
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Transportation, Maritime Affairs and Communications Binali Yıldırım urged Airbus to make an agreement with Turkey on the production of planes in the country. “Airbus has small operations in İzmir and Tuzla; however, such small operations do not measure up to prestige and size of the company. Let's make the operations bigger and produce planes in Turkey. The longer the operation is delayed, the more Airbus will lose out, but Turkey will not as many international companies compete to take part in Turkey's projects. The aviation sector has a lot of growth potential in the region and we support a more comprehensive agreement.”

Leaders from the BRICS group of emerging powers on Wednesday failed to launch a much-anticipated new development bank to rival Western-dominated institutions like the World Bank.
After holding talks in the port city of Durban, leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China and hosts South Africa agreed in principle to create a joint infrastructure lender but said further talks were necessary to finalise the plan.
