Barbara Bush, the snowy-haired first lady whose plainspoken manner and utter lack of pretense made her more popular at times than her husband, President George H.W. Bush, has died.
The wife of the nation's 41st president and mother of the 43rd brought a plainspoken, grandmotherly style to buttoned-down Washington, displaying an utter lack of vanity about her white hair and wrinkles.
The Bushes, who were married Jan. 6, 1945, had the longest marriage of any presidential couple in American history.

Mrs Bush was the wife of the former president, who served from 1989 to 1993, and also the mother of George W Bush - who was president from 2001 to 2009.
