A catastrophic forest fire in Portugal has claimed at least 57 lives.
Most died while trying to flee the Pedrógão Grande area, 50 km south-east of Coimbra, in their cars.

PORTUGAL FIRES
PEDRÓGÃO GRANDE, PORTUGAL

Forest fires raging in central Portugal around the town of Pedrógão Grande have made more than 60 dead and as many injured.

The fire is still not extinct and according to police sources it had natural causes, most probably a lightning. Due to strong winds and high temperatures, the fires propagated very quickly.

Portugal has decreed a three days mourning for what Prime Minister Antonio Costa called "the greatest tragedy we have seen in recent years in terms of forest fires".
