EU HEADS OF STATE & GOVERNMENT MEETING WITH POPE FRANCIS

EU heads of State and Government will meet Pope Francis at the Vatican Friday March 24 at 1800 local time on the eve of the EU summit for the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, the head of the Holy See Press office said Friday.

The pontiff will meet the EU leaders in the Sala Regia of the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican City.

EU leaders will be in Italy to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding document of the European Union, the Rome Treaty, on March 25.

The Argentine pontiff met with EU leaders last May when he received the Charlemagne award for promoting European unity.
In his acceptance speech at the Vatican ceremony, Pope Francis told EU leaders he dreams of a Europe where migrants are welcome, and called on them to "tear down the walls" and build a fairer society.

Invoking the memory of the EU founding fathers' pursuit of integration in the aftermath of World War II, the pontiff said they inspired because they had "dared to change radically the models" that had led to war.

The pope also adressed the European Parliament during a visit to Strasbourg in November 2014.

Pope Francis will be visiting Milan, in northern Italy on the day of the March 25 EU summit.
